Have You Ever Heard a Grizzly Roar? Deep in the western half of the wildest state in America, there’s a place where Grizzlies roam free. Where mountains stand tall and great trout rivers converge. This is the place where community comes together under one Big Sky and aspirations become a reality. This is the University of Montana in Missoula, and we’ve been doing it the Montana Way since 1893.
The Montana Way
The University of Montana in Missoula is built upon a 131-year legacy as the state’s flagship public research university. The University isn’t just in Montana. It is Montana. It embodies everything our rugged state represents. Hard work with a dash of grit, an independent nature entwined with the collective good and a curiosity that pushes us past every bend in the trail—never underestimate UM Grizzlies.
UM’s medium-sized campus (approximately 10,000 students) has produced Rhodes Scholars, groundbreaking researchers, award-winning performers, New York Times best-selling authors, distinguished lawyers and, perhaps most importantly, stewards of our community and way of living. Throughout its legacy, UM has put Montana at the forefront, advocating for the state’s natural resources and Native communities.
Classes, Curriculum and Degrees
Our wide-spanning education offers a lifetime of knowledge and paths to follow. From environmental tracks to business, technology, health, humanities and the arts, if you can dream it, you can do it at UM. With more than 500 academic programs, you can earn associate, bachelor, professional and graduate degrees and technical certificates.
Our mid-sized campus means the best of both worlds. We’re big enough for the opportunities and small enough for the access. That’s why Grizzlies continually seek and achieve prestigious awards, including Rhodes, Udall and Fulbright scholarships. It’s also why professors know your name because, with a 13:1 student-to-faculty ratio, it’s easy to make personal connections that extend beyond the classroom.
You’ll find a way to pursue your dreams at UM. Alongside four-year bachelor’s and graduate degrees, there are several certificates, associate degrees, online and continuing education opportunities. Uncover some of these gems at our Missoula College River Campus or West Campus through our online degrees catalog.
We Are R1
That means we are at the forefront of research and innovation. The R1 designation is given to less than 4 percent of degree-granting universities in the country, including several Ivy League institutions. But we do things a little differently. We bring in every student, not just a select few, and we’re changing the world with research from students and faculty in every department.
The secret to our success is maintaining world-class faculty and state-of-the-art facilities. Ensuring interdisciplinary research and ample funding, including more than $122 million in annual grant spending, also contributes to our advancements. And our core tenets of curiosity and contributing to the common good guide us the rest of the way. Because what’s made in Montana is remaking the world.
Stewards of Our Place
Our habitat is bountiful, with mountains, rivers and lush landscapes that stop you in your tracks. Very few places share the same Rocky Mountain wonder of western Montana, and we’re at the center of everything. This is our home, our haven, and we are responsible for honoring the path before us and caring for this place for generations to come.
This responsibility includes a deep connection to our natural habitat and touches upon the foundational value we put into our educational pillars. With the proper guidance, support and community looking out for each other, plus a little Montana grit and determination, we believe anyone can make a positive difference in the world.
